As young people, it can be hard to manage feelings, feel good, or handle anxiety on your own. Sometimes talking to someone can help you understand yourself better and help you manage life a little better. Opening up to someone can be hard and uncomfortable, so finding someone who is a good fit is important. When trying to figure out whether someone is a good fit, it can be helpful to learn about the psychologist's approach and then ask yourself questions like, How often do I want to attend sessions?, Do I want to learn quick strategies or spend some time talking to get to the root of the problem, or both?, Would I like doing homework in between sessions or not so much?, Do I want my parents to be involved or not involved? Answers to these questions may help you to decide what kind of psychologist you are looking for.

I believe that therapy works best when there is collaboration between the client and psychologist in attempting to understand the problem – when it started, what keeps it going – and then find ways of moving forward. Information about family background, present circumstances, and current relationships is usually a helpful first step in the therapy process. For some young people, creating change arises naturally after gaining insight and understanding into the problem. For others, the problem necessitates change across more than one life domain (e.g., friends, family, school, and home). Change can be difficult, so the speed at which change takes place varies.

If you are interested in working with me, please contact me by phone or email to arrange for a short intake interview over the phone. This phone interview is an opportunity for me to assess whether I can be of help to you, and for you to ask questions and get a sense of who I am.  Once we have determined that we will work together, we will book our first therapy session. I will send you some forms for you to complete and bring with you to your first session.
